Medical Station for Chinese Rural Elderly

Medical Station for Rural Elderly, carried by a car, is equipped with highly mobile instruments with comparatively better functions in medical treatment and diagnosis. After medical base station is set up, it is convenient for medical personnel to operate hygienically because the station has been equipped with pertinent equipment for examining major diseases of rural elderly. Meanwhile, residual space inside the car can be used as functional area for chest fluoroscopy (radiation).

Background

In China, the number of the elderly above 60 years old was up to 0.174 billion in 2010, accounting for 12.8% of the total Chinese population, among which nearly 60% of them lived in rural areas. Compared with cities, there is a more rapid growth in the prevalence rate of rural elderly. Nevertheless, there exists an extremely great gap in the proportion of the elderly who enjoy medical insurance. Namely, 55.3% of rural elderly have no medical insurances.

 

Research & Interview

The research was around rural areas and medical condition of the rural elderly. I determined Jucheng and Yingjiazhuang these two Villages that located in my hometown, Hengshui City, Hebei province, China, as the places where my survey was conducted, in which I selected some old people for interview survey and gathered much information on disease characteristics of rural elderly.

 Certainly, I roughly studied corresponding medical facilities in the Fourth People's Hospital of Hengshui City.

Those materials became the important foundation of my design concept.

 

New Medical System

I established a new medical system which mainly designed and established based on normal diagnoses in rural areas and emergency handling. It can effectively integrate hospital, rural clinics, families of the rural elderly and medical insurance policies to bring the role of a hospital into full play in terms of comprehensive treatment. 

In this medical station, services are not only provided to examine diseases for rural elderly, but also create electronic medical records for them, in order that large and medium-sized hospitals can realize remote diagnosis and examination or medical monitoring for rural elderly. 

When emergencies occur during diagnosis, the car for building up the medical base station can be used as ambulance for promptly gaining emergency ambulance services from a hospital. 
My design just focused on the core of this system, namely Medical Station for Rural Elderly.

As part of NYCxDesign, the students of the MFA in Products of Design at the School of Visual Arts present Engender, a roving and interactive exhibition that explores the role of design in the construction of gender identities. The exhibition’s eight interventions deconstruct simple artifacts and gestures of our gendered world and invite visitors to play along in a performative game of gender mash up and reconstruction. Through a playful series of dynamic, participatory wearables and installations, Engender explores and celebrates the fluidity and spectrum of gendered behavior and design, and compels each of us to revisit how we design and construct our gendered selves. The work comes out of a 10­-week class called Design Performance taught by Sinclair Smith, which explores design exhibition beyond the pedestal, focusing in on interaction, participation, and staging new behaviors.

My role was The Translator

Translator re-introduces guests to the power of visual stimulation, and helps men and women alike reimagine themselves as the opposite sex. Through this imaginative transition implicating sex, gender and everything in between, participants are invited to reflect upon viewing their trans-portrait for the first time.

Introduction:

This concept is from Japanese famous historical role - Ninja. Ninja has always been fascinated by people with the mysterious qualities, not only related to his own professional orientation, but because of his variety of magical skills and abilities, such as stealth. Viewing from the success of co-creation, people have the inherent desire and curiosity to explore the unknown, while the Ninja's stealth capability meets all kinds of imaginations of people and the moods to check it out.

Using these instinctive reactions and emotions, we can change passive into active, so that people may spontaneously and actively participate into the incidents which can inspire people’s curiosity to explore.

For example, this wall sticker, use photographic and PS techniques printing out ninja shape sticker with somewhere environmental image, and then paste it in the proper place. So the paper "Ninja" as if fused in the environment. And when people accidentally discover this sticker, and open it, little ninja on the back will give people a surprise. As a result, the people may be curious whether the rest of the house will also hide something like "stealth ninja". A small activity "search ninja" begins with people's curiosity and desire to explore.

Based on conclusion by previous co-creation workshop: "curiosity and the fun of exploration will be a simple but powerful push", as well as the above-mentioned basic conceptual framework, I designed this concept called NINJA HUNTING. And I built a business model for this concept to cooperate with Nike.

Because NINJA HUNTING itself attracts people going to various places looking for "the hidden ninja", and it inspires people's curiosity and desire to explore, which perfectly fit for with Nike’s attitude towards life of advocating health and working positively. By these internal nature demand of curiosity and desire to explore, to replace the so-called incentives of existing games , changing participants from passive to active.

Campaign will be placed on giant billboards in the streets, and transportation billboards of crowded public, to gain higher exposure. Meanwhile campaign will appear in Nike official website.

Concept description - How it works

Street wall with Graffiti, the brick and other places are pasted many posters the same with the environment. People can look for the ninja "poster" hidden in the surroundings when running. Once ripped the poster imitating the environment, it will have a two-dimensional code for scanning on the blank human form inside. People can get information about the location of next ninja after scanning by mobile. The Ninja which has been found will be automatically marked on running routes. By exploring continually, participants can achieve the purpose of active participation, and also complete a certain amount of exercise.

Co-exist, an equal system between human being and rats

These structures is the medium of the equal system. It can be placed in lots which were considered unusable due to infestation and can begin to create a safe and vibrant space where people can come together. This structure will also contain the rats and keep people and animals separate from the rats and their nests.

Key words: fast-build, balance, equal system, natural.

Background

The CLOTH(Community league of the Heights) has an empty lot in the Washington Heights. Since it without clean and care for a long time, there are a huge number of roof rats. Those rats is a issue for CLOTH using the lot as any available space.

Reference 

In the southwest China, the Dai nationality lives on a fancy structure. The pillars support their house in the air and let the rooms keep a distance from the ground. Thus, they can live safely without the threaten from snakes or other wild animals.

 

 

Sketches & Prototypes

The concepts came out from how to let people use this lot without destroy the existed equal system. The Dai style building structure is supposed to be a great solution in this case. 

 

 

3D Model

The structure can be used as several ways, such as classroom of language programs, office, play area for children. The empty parts of each floor offer a huge space for CLOTH growing plants for benefits.

Also, this structure will have a chance to become a beautiful hanging garden in this neighbourhood.

This router is a mid range and high-end wireless network product I designed for TP-Link's subsidiary brands. Regarding a product in mass production, product positioning is fairly important in the beginning of design, which determines the semantic definition of a product, material selection, surface treatment methods, dimensions and even the color selection. Hence, I repetitively adjusted these variables during design to achieve best matching results.

Moreover, I gained a deeper understanding on the CMF of product after my communication with technical personnel in workshops. Therefore, this product is of great significance for me to accumulate design experience.

The Desk Accessory

This accessory has been used to help me focus on my work when I stay in our studio. In the meantime it can be used as my notice board. Through its structure, which can be rotate fluently and transform easily, I can achieve a goal with interacting with other classmates. So this work can be my media for transmitting information.

The location I stay in studio make me become a person like receptionist easily. Everyone will via my seat when they pass the hallway back and forth. I can interact with them so easily but also often influenced by them continually, which become a barrier for me to focus on my work. In one hand, I want to design and make a accessory which can separate me and the busy world, to ensure I can fall in work without interruption. In the other hand, I don't want to lose connection with my classmates, so I wish it can contain some interesting structure, to let me have interaction with them or even quests who come here for a visit.

 

There are four parts in this design: base, supporting arm, notice board and hook.

The base need to be strong enough to support other parts of the design, so except the issue of connection in different parts, I especially focus on the intensity when I design the accessory. My assumption come true when I test my prototype. The structure I design is simple but strong enough and the rubber blanket also plays an important role in enhance the friction so that the whole accessory can be very stable when it load a lot. The connection between supporting arm and the base is an axis which can rotate 360°.  The supporting arm is constituted by two sections of adjustable wood boards. Three knobs on the supporting arm that can adjust  tightness that ensure the arm can be stable. The important part of interaction is the notice board which can let me post up my sketches or my "statement". I can share my interesting ideas through it to friends. I wish for the hooks because it's really annoying for me when I can't find a place for my package, so I made it.

Story

The inspiration of this project came from a bad day. I got this idea because I want to find peace for my irritability. Especially when I am deeply confused by something. For you guys, maybe you also want to clam down sometimes somehow.

I was thinking the scenario that I can find peace. Such as listening music, cooking, drawing comics and looking at the dark and beautiful starry sky. Then I would like to use Arduino kits and some NeoPixels to realize my plan.

 

Material 

180 NeoPixels, 5V10A power supplier, 4700uf, 10V capacity and infinite wires was necessary before I started my work.

 

Making process

The frame as 75 inch * 30 inch, and I fixed the black fabric which the light can go through also on the frame. Thanks for Natsuki’s help!!!!!

The reason I chose this size is I want to let the users’ view be full of this work.

I cut off all of the NeoPixels and reconnected them. I didn’t want to buy 1000 of NeoPixels and let them overspread in the frame because I just wanted to light them up one by one randomly. A hundred spot will be enough to confused you how many NeoPixels there are behind the screen.

P.S. It’s pretty hard to do this step because there were too much spots need to solder. I did at least 700 times soldering.

After reconnected the NeoPixels, I fix them on the back of the fabric. I used black insulate tape to fix the Neopixels to make sure they could face to the right way. However, the screen became bumpy after I put the tapes on.

I got this idea because I am a "irritable person", but I don't want to break the relationships with my friends or get trouble with strangers when I full of anger. Therefore, I think the best way to avoid the bad ending is warning my "opponents" before I lose control. Then I thought that we fight with fists, so why not give them a warning sign on your fists? I can use the number of LEDs telling them how angry I am at that moment when I against with them. If they keep enrage me, I will light more LED until I totally lose control. The purpose of this object is to warn those people who fall in a quarrel and avoid worse situation coming out.

 

How it works

There are four rows of LED on the back of the glove, they are connect with one powerful battery combination. On the top of each finger of the glove, there are four pieces of conductive fabric connected with those LED rows respectively. Also, there is another piece of conductive fabric on the palm which connected with negative electrode. Once the finger top touch the palm, the LED row will turn on. Therefore, you can use your fingers to control each of the LED row to realize the function.

 

Details

This glove is use the LED to show your degree of angry, but also can use as a tool to encourage people who have hand disability to do rehabilitation. It constituted by a basic glove, four rows of 12 volt LED, wires, and batteries. All colors are black to make sure it looks like cool and unified.

 

In the future, I believe this product will not only become a warning sign, but also can use as an tool to help those people who have hand disability to do rehabilitation. I would like to use this design and structure to do more meaningful things. In addition, it's pretty shark when the LEDs work on the glove, so you can take it go to the concert!
